How to Find Your Perfect Wedding Photographer

by Gina DeConti

Wedding photography is such an important part of your day. You've spent so many months planning every detail. You'll want to be able to look back and remember every moment again and again. Choosing a photography studio can be quite difficult. Here are some questions to consider:

What size studio should I choose? Choose the size of your studio carefully. Large studios deal with a greater number of clients than smaller studios. This can sometimes affect the level of customer service you receive. If the studio is too small, what will happen if your photographer becomes ill? What guarantee do you have that they will still be in business when your wedding date arrives? Try looking for a studio that falls somewhere in between.

What style of photography should I choose? Research the different styles of wedding photography and look for a photographer that captures exactly what you are looking for. You want to hire someone whose work tells the beautiful story that is your wedding day. Their work should document all the moments, the joy and the emotion, in each photograph.

What kind of training should my photographer have? Anyone can pick up a camera and call themselves a photographer. Ideally, you want your photographer to have a formal education in photography, fine art, or photojournalism. Some studios will tell you that they provide training to their photographers, but there is no substitute for experience. Ask to see your photographer's portfolio. Make sure you see samples of more than one event that he or she has documented.

What should be included in my package? This is a very personal choice. Based on what is important to you and your future spouse, you should think very carefully about the kinds of products you would like included in your package. Different studios will offer a wide variety of choices. Most importantly you should consider what kind of album you want. You will want an album that tells the story of your day for generations to come. It is to your advantage to choose a studio that will create a custom storybook for you. Ask if they will be designing it themselves or if they have professional graphic designers on staff. Will they be working from a template, or will your album be a one of a kind piece of artwork for you to treasure.

Will I be receiving my negatives or digital files? Make sure that your photographer offers all the things you truly desire.

What about personality? Chemistry is very important. You are going to be spending the entire day with your photographer! No other vendor will be there with you from the moment you start getting ready until the end of the festivities. Make sure you are hiring someone who is friendly and unobtrusive. You don't want someone orchestrating your entire day. You want to enjoy it! Most importantly, you need to find someone who is willing to sit down with you and go over the entire process. Your photographer should be there to answer your questions and help put your mind at ease. Just remember that ultimately it is your day and all of your vendors are there to make your wedding fantasies a reality.
